TV shut-down mystery

Sky deny they have launched a clampdown

By Tom Cain and Dave Jones
CUSTOMERS of companies supplying Sky television via a rebroadcast system were left literally in the dark this week when programmes were cut without warning on Tuesday evening.

A major supplier of satellite TV equipment told Costa Blanca News that there was a rumour that BskyB – the supplier of Sky television – was in negotiations with Canal Plus to provide its service in English, but this was denied by Sky spokesman in London, Stephen Gaynor, who told CB News that Sky was not negotiating with the Spanish broadcaster.

He added that Sky was fully aware that many people who legally buy their Sky systems in the UK use them in other countries, which is a breach of contract.

Mr Gaynor said that when Sky is made aware of an individual or company that is using Sky cards or boxes illegally, it would switch them off, but added that the company has no way of tracking where an individual box is, so it can only act when the name and address of a card holder is given to them.

At the time of going to press the reason for this week’s shut-off has still not been explained.

In some areas such as Jalón signals were getting through, while in the Vega Baja, especially Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa, people were still experiencing problems on Thursday.

One rebroadcast supplier in the south Costa Blanca has admitted to customers that they do not have the permission of some UK TV companies to broadcast their pictures.

They have said that they are currently working to establish the necessary contacts with UK providers to guarantee pictures in the future.

Paying customers themselves were up in arms this week after they found that the service they had paid for had broken down.

One viewer said: “We could see this coming because a lot of the channels have been changed recently but I am still very annoyed that I can’t watch Sky Sports at home at the moment, when that is what I paid for.”

Billed for phoning Peru

British pensioner hit by huge Telefónica charge

By Dave Jones
A TORREVIEJA pensioner was charged more than 1,000 euros by Telefónica for ringing Peru and other destinations in Latin America – even though he has no friends or contacts in the countries.

Alwyn Temple, aged 77 – who lives alone following the death of his wife last year – told the multinational telecommunications giant that he was visiting the UK at the time and could not have made the calls.

Acting quickly, he was able to stop the payments for 437 euros and 657 euros which the company had tried to take from his bank account.

However, despite being in contact with Telefónica officials over the matter they still cut off his phone line.

The pensioner, who lives close to Cala del Mojón on the outskirts of the town centre, is now unable to communicate with his children by phone or email in the UK.

The retired accountant said: “I first noticed problems with the phone line in October last year and reported this to Telefónica.

“In November they rang me to inform me that my line had been connected to another line and they would correct this.”

Mr Temple said he carried on experiencing interference and also received several strange calls.

Then after returning from a visit to the UK he was faced with the exorbitant charges.

“After many calls to Telefónica to obtain a printout of the bill I was dismayed to find that it contained a lot of calls to Peru and mobiles with numbers that I did not recognise,” he explained.

Mr Temple, who returns regularly to the UK to have his pacemaker checked at Harefield Hospital in London, added: “I can prove that I was not in the country on the dates that a lot of those phone calls were made.

“And my house has a burglar alarm and no one had broken in.”

He explained that he was now in limbo – and was finding communication difficult with the company.

“I want to know what they intend to do,” he added.

“I want to get my landline back and pay them what I owe them but no more than that.”

A regional spokeswoman for Telefónica told CB News that she was looking into Mr Temple’s case and would report back in due course.

Zero tolerance on litter call

Residents invited to help in clean-up campaign

By Nuria Pérez
NEW proposals to clean up Orihuela Costa were agreed by Green party (Los Verdes) representatives and residents at a meeting held on Tuesday at Celtic Isle.

Green spokesman Elliot Sampford proposed adopting the British litter campaign which has proved a great success.

He said: “Instead of complaining about dirty streets and fly-tipping sites, we can take action.

“For example we can put the bags which are thrown on the streets into the bins.

“Councils cannot solve the problem if residents don’t change their attitude.

“Let’s make politicians feel embarrassed if they don’t keep our areas clean.”

Residents at the meeting also claimed that the existing recycling facilities are not good enough.

Mike Chappell – who lives in La Regia – said they had less than one bin for every hundred homes.

He added: “Some of them are cracked from the top to the bottom.”

He said the council had been told of the problems but nothing had been done yet.

Mr Chappell admitted some people feel aversion to recycling but said more recycling bins would encourage residents to keep their areas tidy.

He said: “The nearest recycling site is too far away and bins are full of recyclable materials such as bottles and newspapers.

“It is a knock-on effect – zero tolerance on street rubbish leads to zero crime.”

Both residents and Green party members agreed more education and information is also needed.

According to residents some people don’t know where to dispose of their building waste.

The Greens have asked residents to send them pictures of fly-tipping areas and rubbish so they can pass them on to councillor for the coast José Aniorte in their next meeting.

The Greens said they would ask councillor Aniorte once again to issue a bylaw to control fly-tipping.

Mr Sampford also announced that a campaign to keep the coast free from dogs’ excrement will be launched soon.

Residents billed for builders’ supply

By Dave Jones
RESIDENTS living on a Torrevieja urbanisation who have spent the last 10 years on builders’ water and electricity have been told by troubled construction company Tecnología Urbanística that they now have to pay a 10,000-euro bill.

Homeowners in Calle Miguel Ángel, El Chaparral have suffered continual cuts in recent years in their power supply.

The residents – who have never been granted habitation certificates despite the fact that their homes are on the property registry – have been told the company cannot afford to continue paying.

A Tecnología Urbanística representative said that letters would be sent out to the 16 properties in El Chaparral this week informing them of the situation.

The spokeswoman said that the water bill had been paid but there was an outstanding charge of around 10,000 euros with Iberdrola.

She added that the company had been paying the bills for a number of years and due to the current crisis in the building sector could not continue to do so.

The homeowners in El Chaparral wrote to Tecnología Urbanística at the end of last year to ask the company to take the necessary steps to allow them to secure their habitation certificates.

However they did not receive a reply from the company.

The residents include British expats and Spanish homeowners – and an 84-year-old woman who is suffering health problems.

Useless bus service accusation

By Alex Watkins
THE LACK of profitability of Orihuela Costa’s bus service is the fault of poor planning by the Partido Popular (PP) council, according to the local Socialist party (PSOE).

Party transport spokesman David Lawrie insisted it is a minimum service and alleged that it will inevitably be cancelled.

“It is a useless service which is not used as people cannot find a timetable,” he said.

“If they do it only shows the departure time not when it stops, and there are no real bus stops provided.”

The comments come after the PP announced a second bus line for the coast last week departing from Aguamarina health centre to Playa Flamenca town hall.

Transport councillor Ginés Sánchez said at the time that the bus service was running at a loss and only 2,800 residents a month were using it.

PSOE councillor Rosa Martínez invited the councillor for transport to try the line for himself and see why it was used so little.

She accused him of neglecting his responsibility to tackle climate change.

“Instead of reducing the carbon footprint they are doing the opposite and forcing more car use,” added Mr Lawrie.

He referred to a report he produced last April demonstrating the need for an integrated service between the city and the coast with a realistic timetable that enables passengers to change between routes.

“In the next full council meeting, we will present an economically viable, better planned proposal and call for a publicly run transport company to serve the whole municipality,” pledged Sra Martínez.
